This is How I Will
See My Mother
There are jeans, and the chickens,
the slow steady hacking of the trowel,
dark moist dirt and dried straw, quiet
contemplation under the wide floppy
brim of a French gardening hat,
red clogs that will be left on
the back stairs, so as not to track
crap indoors. Dark brewed early
morning, toast and homemade jam
in old mustard jars. The dogs, after
their crisp lengthy walk, fall asleep
on the sofa. They know the toast and
coffee and eagerly expect theirs. They
know they'll get it, but drool nonetheless.
