Paul's Groceries

Today I brought home
Groceries, from the place
I always go to, up that-
a-way, I'm going there now.

I forgot eggs.

Remembered lettuce, can't
forget how she likes
salad. Always with the
potent garlic, Dijon, vinaigrette.

Also grabbed a baguette,
and the real butter, tomatoes
and a bottle of nice chardonnay.
Cleaned the glasses.
But it's always somethin'.

A small home-cooked meal.
Eaten in the privacy, almost
indecent intimacy, of the earth
toned tile, oak cabinetries,
and scored country butchering
block.

That is us.
Antique butcher blocks.
They have lasted through
generations of wear,
by their own sheer
mass and craftsmanship.
