Baptism of Moon
by Ian Peterson-Nedry, 2/22/96
I see our beginning, the cold, prehistoric, Oregon rain.
Gusts against my window, texturize the air into its
thickness. A large group, hurrying with the umbrella,
headless and mad, they are cold dark Pacific kelp.
From the dance for rain, blistered foot. Hands have
patted too many Jembay under the fragrant cedar,
calling full moon to empty, and again bring light
reflected face to the cauldron. I call the waters to clean.
I want to be as pure as the waters and as stable as moon.
Blue swirling boulders and mossy slow retreat, with wet hair.
Moon rises steady, changes and recognizably fills with the mist.
Stream side begin, howl for moon, rain breath and mornings.
