The back label of each vintage's Ian's Reserve Chardonnay includes a short poem. In 2000, the poem was written by his sister, Wynne Peterson-Nedry.
equinox
for Ian
young boy, big toothy smile, dimples, and sharp eyes
blue eyes cool as the sky, a cold autumn day.
leaves sinking to the ground with determination;
flaming garnet and burnt amber gleam in the air.
young boy with his father, matching suspenders brandished
proudly.
young man, learning to grow, writes about himself.
expression found in pages of verse: Neruda, Heaney,
Brodsky.
his voice created from unfamiliar lands, he navigates an
internal horizon.
writing in the darkness when time is asleep,
this is his discovery.
a young man captures the night on paper, tangible and still.
grown boy in his cap and gown, big smile and sharp eyes.
he leans down and gives his sister a kiss, cigar in hand,
celebratory vision of futures to construct, life ahead.
fog clouds blue skies, summer to autumn and colder still,
time to move on, new land in focus on a distant shore.
