1999 Pinot Gris Vendange Tardive (VT) : The First One We've Made

1999 Vendange Tardive Pinot GrisThe long awaited release of a late harvest Pinot gris is at hand. And, although it is almost a two year old white wine, it is still very much a baby, in need of care and cellaring.

This is a wine that completes our three-level Pinot gris program with what is called in Alsace Vendange Tardive (VT) or translated, Late Harvest. Pretty simple. But not a simple wine.

It is not traditionally hyper-sweet, but is rather very structured, with some sugar and with moderate to high alcohols. In other words, very complex and intense.

We dropped crop in half in a very intense and perfect white wine vintage, then pulled out the stops in the winery. Sugars were in excess of 27 brix and there was a minor amount of botrytis and raisining.

It will take another couple years at least to be ultimately rich, but try it now as it fleshes out. It will be the perfect match for foie gras or hard cheeses or courses difficult to match. It is not syrup, but rather a reserve’s reserve. Only 150 cases produced.
