Aye, aye, matey, there's a revolution afoot, established to urge that we "rediscover the flavors and savors of regional cooking and banish the degrading effects of Fast Food."
Established in 1989 in Italy, and undoubtedly pleased that it's growing slowly, but surely, the International Slow Food Movement notes "we are enslaved by speed and have all succumbed to the same insidious virus: Fast Life, which disrupts our habits..." Their aim is that "suitable doses of guaranteed sensual pleasure and slow, long-lasting enjoyment preserve us from the contagion of the multitude who mistake frenzy for efficiency."
Not a joke, there is a website (www.slow-food.com), a quarterly publication called Slow (in English, Italian, German), charities, events including Cheese '99 September 27-9 in Bra Italy, and even a Slow Food baseball hat. In my mind, a great Holiday Gift for the new century!
